Cook Biotech Becomes an Educational Partner with the Georgia Tech/Emory Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues

West Lafayette, Ind. – Cook Biotech Incorporated is pleased to announce a recently established partnership with the Georgia Tech/Emory Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues (GTEC). GTEC is a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center, funded in the fall of 1998. The purpose of this Center is to promote research and training in tissue engineering and, through interaction with industry, to stimulate application of useful knowledge for technological innovation.

Cook Biotech has joined with the GTEC as an Industrial Educational Partner. The Educational Partners Program has been designed to maximize dialogue between industry and the Georgia Tech/Emory tissue-engineering team. As an industrial partner, Cook Biotech will have a seat at the table where technological advances are discussed, be first to know of inventions, have opportunities for collaborative research, and have access to graduate students equipped with bioengineering skills.

“One of the best ways for us as a company to stay at the forefront of tissue engineering is to work with the leaders in the field. Clearly, the scientists at Georgia Tech are leaders in this arena, and their Industrial Partners program seemed a natural fit for Cook Biotech,” said Michael Hiles, Vice President of Research at Cook Biotech.

Cook Biotech (www.cookbiotech.com) is actively developing extracellular matrix (ECM) technology and biological scaffolds for numerous medical purposes. Medical products utilizing Cook’s licensed and patented ECM technology are currently marketed worldwide for use in wound management and surgical repair of soft tissues. Together with a network of medical practitioners, Cook Biotech is identifying the medical needs most compatible with ECM technology and developing products to meet these needs.

With international headquarters in Bloomington, Ind., privately held COOK® (www.cookgroup.com/) is a leading designer, manufacturer and global distributor of minimally invasive medical device technology for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Since its founding in 1963, Cook has created innovative technologies for stents and stent-grafts, catheters, wire guides, introducer needles and sheaths, embolization coils, tissue-engineered medical biomaterials, vena cava filters, implanted cardiac lead extraction equipment and other minimally invasive medical devices.
